#1: U.S. Travel Ban Perceived Through JAL and ANA

2/6/2017

As of January 30, the two largest Japanese airlines ANA and JAL have rejected all passengers of seven predominantly Muslim countries holding valid U.S. visas from boarding their planes bound for the United States. I’ve come across numerous comments referring to this action as an act of kindness for the passengers.

Is it really so?

Shouldn’t act of kindness be perceived from the viewpoint of the recipient of that act?

Let’s think about this for a moment.

Assume that you are suddenly rejected from boarding on your return flight back home after a fun vacation overseas? What’s going to happen to your family waiting for your return? Your work schedule and your child’s school starting the following day? How would you feel if you were deprived of your ordinary life?

Today, that is the reality for many people of those seven Muslim nations.

They left the U.S. for a short while either for pleasure or work, and now they can’t return to their ordinary lives. And they’re fighting for their livelihoods through lawyers while being detained at detention centers in the U.S. Everyone should be protected of the basic right to live his/her ordinary life. And these individuals can best fight to retain their rights on the scene through their lawyers. Yet, if the airlines reject them from boarding their planes, they’re minimized of their power to fight. They’re excluded from even getting to the starting line.

Is that an act of kindness?

Isn’t kindness giving the choice to someone who desperately needs it?

Explain to the passengers the real possibility of flying out to the U.S. and not being able to enter the country. Explain that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspectors as well as the airlines are in confusion with this travel ban, and they can be turned away at the border.

But if they want to take a chance, giving them that choice is the true act of kindness.
